The Prescription Drug Predicament: Improving Access and Fostering Innovation

prescription drug costs? Physicians, here’s your chance to find out.
The pharmaceutical industry is essential to developing and providing lifesaving medical treatments. But the price of prescription drugs can prevent patients from getting the medicines they need. At the 15th Annual Public Health Leadership Forum, a free half-day CME program, health
care leaders and practitioners will gather to grapple with prescription drug costs and the implications for patients, doctors, and public health.
The program will identify opportunities for balancing our reliance on pharmaceutical innovation against the price of prescription drugs as a barrier to access. Speakers include Monica Bharel, MD, MPH, commissioner of MDPH; Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, dean of BU
School of Public Health, and Kenneth Kaitin, PhD, professor of medicine and director of the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. The event includes a panel discussion and networking opportunities.
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize the impact of rising prescription drug prices on patients and the health care system
- Identify the main factors that contribute to high drug prices in the United States
- Give examples of how regulation and competition influence the pharmaceutical industry
- Discuss the importance of pharmaceutical innovation in treating disease
