WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance
Charitable Foundation today announced that it has awarded Jane Doe Inc.,
the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic
Violence, $25,000 to provide support to those who experience sexual
assault and domestic violence.
“We are pleased to support this exceptional community-based
program,” said John M. Crowe, M.D., Chair of the MMS and Alliance
Charitable Foundation. “It is crucial that the medical community
and Jane Doe Inc. continue to work together to prevent all types of
violence; grants are just one way physicians can help support this
effort.”
“Jane Doe has taken a broad new leadership in the area of
health related issues for survivors of sexual assault and domestic
violence,” said Judith E. Beals, executive director of Jane Doe
Inc. “Grants such as the $25,000 from the Massachusetts Medical
Society and Alliance Charitable Foundation helps our organization
provide support, information and capacity building to our membership
programs that will assist them in a wide range of areas related to
health issues.”
Jane Doe's membership consists of more than 60 community-based crisis
centers and battered women's programs that operate throughout
Massachusetts. These member programs provide comprehensive prevention
and intervention services, advocate for public policy, and deliver
health-related services, such as crisis intervention through medical
advocacy, accompanying survivors to testing and medical visits,
providing counseling on trauma and various health issues.
Jane Doe also started health initiative programs that focus on the
HIV Pilot Project to increase access for survivors of sexual assault and
domestic violence to confidential HIV counseling and testing service,
the Statewide Healthcare Awareness, Response, Resource and Education on
Domestic Violence (SHARED), and to strengthen the organizational
capacity of its member programs to address health issues
effectively.
The mission of the Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance
Charitable Foundation is to support the development and nurturing of
cooperation between individuals, professions, institutions, and the
community, to creatively address issues that may affect the health,
benefit, sand welfare of the community.
The Massachusetts Medical Society, with more than 17,000
physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating
for the physicians and patients of Massachusetts. Founded in 1781, the
MMS is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country.
