Description:
Research
confirms that patients in the United States are routinely undertreated
for pain. This problem is widely recognized and documented in the
medical literature. Despite its prevalence, chronic pain remains
one of the most poorly understood and untreated conditions in primary
care. Chronic pain is a syndrome, which influences and is
influenced by many potential factors (physiological, psychological and
social), all of which require treatment to achieve an optimal clinical
outcome. Effective management of chronic pain is more easily attained if
it is properly recognized and treated.
This conference
will focus on pain conditions most commonly seen in the primary care
setting such as headache pain, pain management in older populations, the
increasing correlation between pain and chemical dependency and
distinguishing chronic from acute pain. An interactive panel discussion will complete the
program as faculty address pain management in dual-diagnosis patients
and cultural mores that may influence a patient’s acknowledgment
and description of pain.
