Small Dream, By: Jeffery Kaufman To any
observer of trends in the performance and finance of medicine in the US,
the challenges are numerous and profound. How physicians document
and communicate information is a huge issue. An all-digital health
record is no panacea. What matters is how that electronic health
record (EHR) is used and shared. Read the full article.
Physician to Join Iraq War Zone Hampden Member,

Sister Caritas Cancer Center Recognized by American College
of Surgeons
The Sister Caritas Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center has long been
committed to providing high quality care with a personal touch, and now
another national organization is renewing its recognition of the
program. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of
Surgeons has again granted “Three-Year Accreditation with
Commendation” to the Cancer Program at Mercy Medical
Center.
In order to attain this achievement, the facility must demonstrate a
“Commendation” level of performance during an on-site
survey, regarding one or more standards that represent the full scope of
the cancer program. These standards include cancer committee leadership,
cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach
and quality improvement. The facility must also receive a compliance
rating for all other standards.
The CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to
improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through
standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of
comprehensive, quality care. It was established by the American
College of Surgeons in 1922.
The Sister Caritas Cancer Center was also awarded a three-year
accreditation in Radiation Oncology by the American College of Radiology
(ACR) earlier this year. The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for
the achievement of high practice standards based on evaluations by
board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists.

MMS Handwashing Mascot, "Soapy" Goes on the Road
Due to the most recent outbreak of flu in schools, “Soapy,”
the Massachusetts Medical Society's handwashing mascot made an
appearance in several schools in Hampden County. The children were
taught the “whys, whens, and hows" of handwashing. Designed for
children in grades K-3, the program featured Suzanne Skibinski,
executive director of HDMS, who engaged the school children in an
interactive presentation about proper handwashing. After the
presentation the children were visited by “Soapy," a costumed
cartoon-like character.
