Public Health Website of the Month

National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute

September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month. An estimated 99.5 million American adults have total blood cholesterol values of 200 mg/dL and higher, and about 39.9 million American adults have levels of 240 or above -- levels that increase their risk of heart disease.

The National Institutes of Health's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's website, www.nhlbi.nih.gov/index.htm, contains cholesterol information for the general public, as well as for health care professionals, including clinical guidelines on cholesterol management in adults. The site features a "Check Your Cholesterol and Heart IQ" quiz and a special expanded cholesterol interactive site, "Live Healthier, Live Longer."
