Fraud and Abuse Prevention: What the Physician
Needs To Know
The medical community recognizes fraud and abuse as
serious drain on health care resources that should be devoted to patient
care. But what constitutes fraud and abuse? In view of the increasingly
complex laws and regulations that govern physician participation in
Medicare and Medicaid, the answers are not always apparent even to the
most ethical and conscientious physicians. The Massachusetts Medical
Society has prepared this manual to help physicians and medical office
personnel understand the nature and scope of fraud and abuse
enforcement, and comply with the guidelines that cover the
documentation, coding, and billing processes.
