Physician Patient Care Hours Survey: Fall 2009

The Society’s Physician Patient Care Hours Survey findings offer researchers and policy experts valuable insight into the complexity of estimating the number physicians delivering services to patients in Massachusetts given that physicians spend varying amounts of time in primary care versus specialty care and are also faced with administrative burdens that further diminish the amount of time spent delivering patient care in general, and primary care specifically.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), HHC is defined as a service prescribed by a physician and provided by a variety of health care professionals.

2009 MMS Physician Practice Environment Index Report

This report shows that the index for the Massachusetts physician practice environment declined by 1.5% in 2008, largely due to physicians’ costs associated with maintaining a practice; physicians’ professional liability costs; more physician job vacancies, as reported by New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) physician employment advertisements.
