Course Overview
The changes to the
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) were
passed under the HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and
Clinical Health) Act as part of the economic stimulus legislation
earlier in 2009. New fines, which can reach $1.5 million, were clarified
in an interim final rule from the Office of Civil Rights that took
effect Nov. 30, 2009. One of the major changes is that employees of
health care providers can be held personally (and criminally) liable for
violations. Health care providers need to be aware of the changes in the
law and what actions they need to take in their practice to mitigate
their risk.

physicians and allied health professionals.

Course Objectives

Provide physicians and other
health care providers a reminder of the regulations implemented via the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in
2003.
-
Become familiar with the
modifications to HIPAA enacted under the Health Information Technology
for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009(HITECH).
-
Discuss the changes that
have already been implemented and those that are scheduled over the next
several years.

Emphasize the augmented fiscal
and legal penalties under the updated legislation.

is April 26, 2011.
The Massachusetts Medical Society
designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only
claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the
activity.
This program meets the criteria of
the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine for risk management
study.
Participants will receive a
confidential report of their examination score. You must receive a score
of 70% or better to receive AMA PRA Category 1
Credit™. A confirmation of credit will be issued at the
end of the course to those who successfully complete the
examination.

implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the Joint
