Course Overview
Welcome to this introductory course for MA Responds
volunteers. This course provides an overview on how to prepare for and
respond to a public health emergency or other event. It is intended to
complement additional training volunteers will receive through face to
face meetings with their local MRC unit or other volunteer group, other
courses recommended by volunteer coordinators and
“just-in-time” training provided on-site when you
participate in an actual deployment or
exercise. Modules include:

Module 3 - Incident Command System - ICS
Module 4 - Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication
Module 5 - Personal Preparedness
Module 6 - Activation
Module 7 - Safety and Security
Module 8 - Individuals Requiring Additional Assistance
Module 9 - Behavioral Health
(Note: Start Course will take you to Module 1 -
Introduction.)
Intended Audience
This course is intended for physicians, nurses, and allied health
care professionals involved in emergency preparedness or interested in
responding to a public health emergency.

Course Objectives
- Identify volunteer roles in MA Responds
- Outline volunteer responsibilities
- Define a public health emergency
- List examples of types of public health events and emergencies
- Explain the benefits and key roles of an Incident Command System
(ICS)
- List five functions of the ICS
- Describe crisis and emergency risk communication
- Identify the central person who controls communication
- Prepare yourself and your family in the event of an emergency
- Recognize ways to help individuals requiring additional assistance
affected by a public health event
- Describe the MA Responds system activation process
- Outline requirements and activation information for volunteers
- List priorities for safety and security
- Identify the components of proper hand hygiene and use of Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Define groups that may require additional assistance
- Define common behavioral health reactions to emergencies
- Identify people most at risk and ways MA Responds volunteers can
help
Course Credit
Deadline for completing the course is August 15, 2012.
The Massachusetts Medical Society designates this enduring
material for a maximum of .25 AMA PRA Category 1
Credit™. Physicians should claim only credit
commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
This program meets the criteria of the Massachusetts Board of
Registration in Medicine for risk management study.
Participants will receive a confidential report of their examination
score. You must receive a score of 70% or better to receive AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit™. A confirmation of credit will be
issued at the end of the course to those who successfully complete the
examination.
The Massachusetts Medical Society is accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to
provide continuing medical education for physicians.
(Note: Each module is designated for .25 AMA PRA Category 1
Credits™ for a maximum of 2.25 AMA PRA Category 1
Credits™ for the completion of all 9 modules.)
Continuing education credit for other health professionals can be
obtained in accordance with the regulations governing continuing
education requirements for the following Boards of
Registration:
Board of Registration in Nursing (CMR 244 5.00), Board of
Registration of Social Workers (258CMR 31.00et seq), Board of Mental
Health Professions (262CMR 7.00), Board of Certification of Health
Officers (241CMR 4.03), Board of Registration of Sanitarians (255CMR
5.02).
