Pandemic Flu: Practical Information
and Strategies for Preparedness
Start Course
Updated November 9, 2009
Introduction
It is
essential that health care professionals have the latest guidance on the
current pandemic. Providers who are educated about influenza will
understand the need to help educate their patients on how to prevent and
prepare for seasonal and pandemic flu. Publicizing the benefits of cough
etiquette and Personal Protective Behavior are essential for patients
and the public. This will lessen the spread of the influenza virus and
hopefully the numbers of critically ill patients.
This program
is designed to give practical information and strategies that will
increase physician understanding and familiarity with the concerns
surrounding influenza, and the current pandemic. The original PowerPoint
was created by MMS and its Ad Hoc Committee on Preparedness in 2006. In
order to increase the number of physicians who are aware of this
essential information, the MMS Department of Public Health and Education
along with the MMS Committee on Preparedness in cooperation with the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health decided to develop the
presentation into a self-directed learning opportunity for physicians.
The program will educate health care providers about the similarities
and differences among, seasonal influenza, avian and swine influenza and
pandemic influenza. It is vital that all physicians understand the need
for vaccination and the current guidance, so that they and their
patients are prepared.
