Course Overview

This session takes an in-depth look at how an electronic health record (EHR) changes workflow in a formerly paper-based practice. You will learn how to identify and breakdown component task in a typical patient visit. You will be able to view and download tools which will allow you to describe and examine your own practice workflow. You will also understand the metamorphosis that will take place in an EHR enabled practice and how to manage your own workflow redesigned.

Instructions for Completing this Course and Exam

The following course was developed from a live program. The course presentation will open in a separate player window displaying the presentation slides, synchronized audio and transcripts. In order to view this course, you will need to download free Flash 8 software or higher if you do not already have it installed on your computer.

When you are done viewing the presentation module, close the window and click Proceed to Exam in the left navigation bar.  You will be directed through the eCommerce screens.  After payment is received, the exam will display.

After completing the required reading through the Course Information below, click on Start Course to begin the activity.

Intended Audience

This program is intended for physicians and practice administrators who are in the early stages of EHR adoption.

Course Objectives

Course Credit

Deadline for completing the course is January 31, 2009.

The Massachusetts Medical Society designates E.H.R. 101 for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This program meets the criteria of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine for risk management study.

Participants will receive a confidential report of their examination score. You must receive a score of 70% or better to receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  A confirmation of credit will be issued at the end of the course to those who successfully complete the examination.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the Joint Sponsorship of the Massachusetts Medical Society, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative.

The Massachusetts Medical Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Workflow Re-design course and all associated course materials are available free of charge. An opportunity to complete an exam and receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit for a nominal fee is available at the end of the course. The course fees are as follows:

Course Faculty

Barbara Drury is President of Pricare Incorporated, an independent consulting firm founded in 1982 and located in Larkspur, Colorado. Pricare’s mission is to provide clear and independent options for physicians making decisions about the use of computers in their offices. This has included researching and advising practices about the acquisition and growth of practice management systems and electronic health record systems. In addition to her responsibilities at Pricare, Barbara frequently lectures about the impact of office based computers systems, electronic medical records systems and HIPAA for entities such as malpractice carriers, medical societies and the medical group management association, the Colorado Bar Association and other healthcare organizations. Barbara is a member of HIMSS and currently chairs our Ambulatory Care, Knowledge Resource Task Force.
