The Accidental Hero: Bystander Physician Response in the Mass
Casualty Setting Subsequent to 9/11, many organizations
implemented disaster preparedness and management programs, and
residencies in disaster medicine and trauma management have
proliferated. Nevertheless, the history of disaster response over the
past several decades suggests that bystanders are as likely to become
involved as trained personnel. Many medical organizations have
encouraged their members to volunteer for service both domestically and
abroad when disasters strike, counting on sound medical judgment and
general medical experience to make up for any lack in formal training in
disaster response.
This discussion is intended to examine the role of bystander
physician response in the mass casualty setting and to offer an
introduction to the concepts and tools that enable bystander physicians
to make effective and satisfying contributions.
