Physician Peer Support Group Meetings

Physician Health Services hosts a number of meetings open to ALL physicians, medical students, and residents in recovery and for those seeking peer support. These meetings are described below. Contact PHS at 781-434-7404 for information regarding the locations of these meetings. Some groups require that you meet with the facilitator before attending your first meeting.

Please call PHS for more information about any of these groups. As always, your contact with PHS is confidential.

  1. Monday & Thursday Peer Support Group. This is a facilitated group that follows AA guidelines and is held Mondays and Thursdays at 7:00 P.M., Waltham, MA.

  2. First and Third Wednesday Support Group. This group is open to spouses and significant others, in addition to the affected physician; it is sponsored by Physician Health Services and meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M., Waltham, MA.

  3. Physician Health Support Group. A three times per month meeting set up to respond to the expressed needs of physicians, residents, and medical students who are experiencing the rigors of medicine and who could benefit from collegial support. The focus will be on strengthening the ability to deal effectively with patients, employers, hospitals, co-workers, colleagues, peers, family members, and significant others. The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays and fourth Monday of the month from 6:30 to 7:45 P.M., Waltham, MA.

  4. Greenfield Group. Wednesdays, 7:00 - 8:00 P.M., Greenfield, MA

  5. Tuesday Evening Support Group. 7:00 - 8:00 P.M., Falmouth, MA

  6. Faith-Based Support Group. This group is a weekly men’s group affiliated with the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Cambridge and provides supports to professionals and others within a faith-based context.The group meets Mondays from 8:00 - 10:00 P.M. in Brookline, MA.

  7. Worcester Monday Doctors’ 12 Step Group. This group is open to any doctoral level healthcare professional with substance use concerns. The group meets every other Monday from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M. in Worcester, MA.

  8. Health Care Professionals Recovery Group. This nonfacilitated self-help format support group meets weekly. And is open to any licensed health care professional. Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 P.M., Pittsfield, MA.

For those in recovery, there are approximately 1500 AA meetings each week in Eastern Massachusetts alone. A list is available at most meetings, at PHS, and from AA Central Service: 368 Congress Street, Boston (617-426-9444). In addition, there are a number of professional peer support groups, which, while not technically AA meetings, follow AA guidelines.
