Luanne E. Thorndyke,
MD, FACP is Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at the
University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). In this
role, she is responsible for all matters related to faculty,
including faculty and leadership development, academic affairs
(appointment, promotion and tenure), faculty
recruitment/retention/satisfaction, and diversity/gender and equity
issues. Prior to joining UMMS, she was Associate Dean for
Professional Development and Professor of Medicine at the
Pennsylvania State College of Medicine/Hershey Medical
Center. She established the Penn State Jr. Faculty
Development Program, an initiative that has become a nationally
recognized model for faculty development, mentoring, and program
evaluation. Dr. Thorndyke also served as Assistant Dean of
Continuing Medical Education, responsible for post-graduate
educational programming for physicians, nurses, and allied health
personnel. A graduate of Duke University and the University
of Nebraska College of Medicine, she has more than 15 years of
broad experience in college administration, including policy,
programmatic and professional development, mentoring, academic
affairs, educational leadership and financial oversight, and
clinical administration.
Dr. Thorndyke has extensive experience in educational planning,
program implementation, and facilitating initiatives in women's
leadership development, equity, and diversity. Her scholarly
interests include faculty development and mentoring, leadership and
advancement of women, and faculty competencies. She is a
member of the Steering Committee of the AAMC Group on Faculty
Affairs (GFA) and the Research Subcommittee of the GFA.
She is also a member of the Accreditation Review Council (ARC) of
the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME),
the Society of Academic CME (SACME), and has served on the
Coordinating Committee for the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and
Science. A board-certified internist and geriatrician, as well as
Professor of Medicine at UMMS, Dr. Thorndyke's clinical interests
lie in the areas of menopausal health, osteoporosis, and
geriatrics.
