Dr. Ria Roberts honored by Essex North District Medical Society as the 2024 Community Clinician of the Year
Ria Roberts, MD, a geriatric medicine physician at Lowell Community Health Center, has been selected as the Essex North District Medical Society’s 2024 Community Clinician of the Year, an award recognizing her professionalism and contributions as a
physician.
Dr. Roberts completed her medical school education at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, where she became a published first author on several biomedical articles on the Vitamin D status in Black individuals; and was
awarded the highest research honor for medical student research. She subsequently completed her residency training in Internal Medicine-Primary Care, with a Clinician Educator Distinction, at Yale New Haven Hospital. During that time, she was also
named Young Physician Leader by the Connecticut State Medical Society and Yale-New Haven Health. She then started her tenure at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as a fellow in the Harvard Medical School Multi-Campus Geriatric Fellowship
Program. During the fellowship year, she co-authored a Chapter in Hazzard's Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology entitled Syncope and Dizziness in the Older Adult and completed the Shapiro Institute Medical Education Scholarship Program.
She is currently an Instructor in Medicine, part-time, at Harvard Medical School, and an academic hospitalist in the Division of General Medicine at BIDMC. Additionally, she serves as the Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Advocacy (DIA) for Graduate
Medical Education (GME), and as the Director for Diversity Recruitment and Retention within the Department of Medicine. In these capacities, she focuses on creating community and advancing diversity within graduate medical education as well as Harvard
Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC.
Outside of BIDMC, she is a geriatric medicine consultant and topic editor for Dynamed, EBSCO but her primary clinical role is at Lowell Community Health Center, serving as Medical Director for the Program for Healthy Aging, which was developed under her
astute leadership. Her comprehensive approach to geriatric medicine focuses on the Geriatric “5 Ms” Framework- Mind, Mobility, Multi-complexity, Medications and Matters Most, which addresses the complex needs of older adults.
