Waltham – April 30 -- Each year, MMS members in the 20 district medical societies select one of their colleagues to be honored as the district’s Community Clinician of the Year, reflecting their professionalism and contributions as a physician. Each year, the number totals 20, but in 2013, it was reached in an unusual way.
In a first for the Massachusetts Medical Society, one physician was honored by two districts, and in a rare occurrence, two physicians - a husband and wife - took co-honors in one district.
Richard A. Gross, M.D. of Lakeville was selected as the Community Clinician of the Year by the Bristol North and Plymouth districts, marking the first time since the award was established in 1998 that one physician has been honored by two district societies. Dr. Gross, who was forced to retire last year due to the abrupt development of cancer, was a primary care physician who served patients in Middleboro, Taunton and the surrounding communities for 34 years.
In the Bristol South district, husband and wife Dr. Wendy Stern and Dr. Jeremy Stern of North Dartmouth were both honored as Community Clinicians of the Year. Dr. Wendy Stern is a physician with Northeast Ear Nose and Throat in North Dartmouth; Dr. Jeremy Stern is an orthopedic surgeon in private practice, also in North Dartmouth.
