Dr. Lynn Black is honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society with its Award for Excellence in Public Health

Lynn Black, MD, MPHWALTHAM – Lynn Black, MD, MPH, an internist at Massachusetts General Hospital, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2018 recipient of the Henry Ingersoll Bowditch Award for Excellence in Public Health, one of the Society’s most prestigious honors.

Named after a leading figure in medicine and public health in the 19th century, the award is presented annually to a Massachusetts physician who demonstrates creativity, commendable citizenship, initiative, innovation and leadership in the public health and advocacy fields.

Dr. Black, renowned for her expertise in emergency medicine and internal medicine, has a passion for public health that spans well beyond Boston, as she has shared her expertise working locally and globally, including in Haiti, Liberia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Micronesia. 

Dr. Black has provided exceptional leadership in multiple international health projects involving disaster response, refugee health and maternal-child health. She has also worked on gender-based violence in Africa and Haiti. She teaches about the ethics of disaster response and global health, and advocates for those people who have been marginalized in society.

As a member of the Board of Directors of Last Mile Health and as a past Chair, Dr. Black has worked with the Liberian people and government to help bring health care to remote populations during the Ebola outbreak.  She also serves on the Board of Directors of St. Boniface Haiti Foundation assisting with the response after Hurricane Matthew and ensuring access to high quality care for the people of Southern Haiti.
