Dr. S. Jay Jayasankar is honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society with its Award for Distinguished Service

Waltham, Mass. – March 17th   S. Jay Jayasankar, M.D. has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society with its 2017 Award for Distinguished Service to the Massachusetts Medical Society, an honor given each year to a member of the Society who has made significant contributions to the goals of the organization through demonstrated leadership, member recruitment, and committee work. 

The award, one of the most prestigious given by the Society to one of its members, will be presented at the Society’s Annual Meeting April 28 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston.  

In nominating him for the award, his colleagues characterized Dr. Jayasankar as a “role model for the value of diversity in medicine” and noted his service to the society, which they described as “embracing the Society’s mission to advance knowledge, uphold ethical and professional standards, and promote medical institutions committed to patient welfare.”  

A member of the medical society since 1973, Dr. Jayasankar has served the organization in multiple capacities for more than two decades. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees and the House of Delegates, Chair of the Committee on Professional Liability, and member of the Committees on History; Publications; Quality of Medical Practice; and Ethics, Grievances, and Professional Standards.  He is also a member of the Task Force on Electronic Health Records Interoperability and Usability, and an advisor to the MMS & Alliance Charitable Foundation, which he helped to launch in 2000 and later served as a director. 

Since 2003, Dr. Jayasankar has been president of the Boston Medical Library, the library of the state medical society that serves as a resource for the lifelong learning of practicing physicians of Massachusetts. 

Dr. Jayasankar has also been active with the American Medical Association, serving as a delegate and former chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Delegation and chair of the Governing Council of the AMA International Medical Graduates Section.  Additionally, he has served as president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Indian Medical Association of New England. 

Dr. Jayasankar received his medical and master of surgery degrees from Grant Medical College of Bombay University. He currently is a clinical instructor in orthopedics at Harvard Medical School and a consultant in orthopedics at Massachusetts General Hospital. 

His previous honors include Congressional recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community, the Pfizer House Call Honor for contributions to the public health of the Indian American community and the Indus Star Award for service to and leadership of the Indian American community.  Dr. Jayasankar resides in Weston.
