Wellesley physician honored with Grant V. Rodkey Award for Contributions to Medical Education

Richard M. Schwartzstein, M.D.
Waltham – May 1 – Wellesley resident Richard M. Schwartzstein, M.D., the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Harvard Medical School, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2013 recipient of the Grant V. Rodkey Award, an honor recognizing a Massachusetts physician for outstanding contributions to medical education and medical students. He will receive the award, one of the Society’s most prestigious, at the organization’s annual meeting in Boston May 10.
In nominating him for the honor, his colleagues noted that “Dr. Schwartzstein is a remarkably inspiring physician and clinical educator. He challenges students to excel, to be able to fully comprehend problems and approach patients without cognitive biases. There is no doubt that the impact of his teaching has truly deepened all of his students’ clinical acumen, and all of our future patients stand to benefit from his great impact on us."
Board certified in critical care medicine, Dr. Schwartzstein is Associate Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Vice President for Education, and Executive Director of the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is also director of the Harvard Medical School Academy, established to advance the education of physicians and scientists throughout the School’s community by supporting teaching and learning, fostering the careers of medical educators, providing programming for teachers, and supporting research and scholarship.
A magna cum laude graduate of Princeton with a B.A., Dr. Schwartzstein received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He is the recipient of more than two dozen teaching awards from various organizations, including the S. Robert Stone Award for Excellence in Teaching from Harvard Medical School in 2002; the Harvard Medical School Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2003; the Robert C. Moellering Jr. M.D. Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Clinical Care from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; and the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007 from Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians.
