Waltham – April 30 – Stow resident Donald H. Hangen, M.D., has been honored by his physician peers of the Middlesex West District Medical Society as its 2013 Community Clinician of the Year, an award recognizing his professionalism and contributions as a physician.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community and who stands out as a leading caregiver. The Middlesex West District is comprised of nearly 600 physicians who work and live in 18 communities in the MetroWest area. The award will be presented April 10 at the district society’s annual meeting in Framingham.

Dr. Hangen is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon practicing with Orthopaedic Associates of Marlborough. A magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College with a B.A., he earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his training in orthopaedics at the Harvard Orthopaedic Residency Program. Prior to joining Orthopaedic Associates of Marlborough in 1995, he served on the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital and was an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Hangen was President of the Massachusetts Orthopaedic Association from 2003-2004. He has held a staff appointment at Marlborough Hospital since 1995, and from 2004-2006 was president of the hospital’s medical staff and a member of its Board of Trustees.  Currently he serves as the Medical Director of Musculoskeletal Services at Marlborough Hospital.

From 1990-1999, he served as an officer in the Medical Corps of the United States Army Reserve. A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he has been an instructor in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School since 1997.  

Dr. Hangen has also had a strong interest in orthopaedic care in the developing world and has completed a number of extended volunteer assignments with Health Volunteers Overseas in Bhutan and Tanzania.
