Waltham, Mass. – May 9 –  Winchester resident Edward P. Butler, M.D. has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society with its Committee Chair Service Award, an honor recognizing exceptional leadership and service to the Society, the statewide professional association of physicians. He will receive the award at the Society’s annual meeting in Boston on May 11.

Dr. Butler is being recognized for his nine years of service as a member of the Committee on Medical Education, including three years as chair from 2010-2013 and two years as vice chair from 2009-2010. Among the committee’s responsibilities are the development and oversight of continuing medical education for health care providers in the state and establishing policy governing the role of the Society as an accredited provider of continuing medical education.

Dr. Butler is Chief Academic Officer at Hallmark Health System, a position he has held since 2005. He served as Hallmark’s Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs from 1997-2005 and has been a member of Hallmark’s Board of Trustees since 1997.  

He also serves as Director of Medical Education at Hallmark Health System, comprised of Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, as well as Hallmark’s ambulatory sites in Somerville, Stoneham and Reading, and serves as Director of Continuing Medical Education at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Butler received his M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. He was appointed a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the school in 1995.  

Board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Butler is a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America and is a Councilor and Chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee of the Massachusetts Infectious Disease Society. He is also a member of the Physician Issues Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. A published author of clinical articles on infectious disease, Dr. Butler serves as a peer reviewer for articles on infectious disease and pharmacotherapy for the Journal of Managed Care Medicine.

A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society since 1983, Dr. Butler has previously been honored as the recipient of the Martin Loeb Award in Medicine from the Tufts University School of Medicine, the Community Clinician of the Year from the Middlesex District Medical Society, and an inductee into the National Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. In 2012, he was honored as the recipient of the Kenneth Kaplan M.D. Award as the Clinician of the Year from the Massachusetts Infectious Disease Society.
