2013 MMS Annual Meeting, “Navigating the Currents of Change,” Opens Thursday
Don’t miss the biggest event on the MMS calendar. This year’s 2013 MMS Annual Meeting is “Navigating the Currents of Change: Integrating Innovative Technologies Into Your Clinical Practice,” featuring an extensive slate of speakers, including Dr. Paul Farmer, Partners in Health founder. Read a full listing of Annual Meeting forums, lectures, education programs and social events.

Pre-register no later than Tuesday, May 7 for faster onsite check in. MMS members don’t have to wait until next week to weigh in on MMS policy matters -- log onto the online community for MMS members. Share your thoughts now on evolutionary biology, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and voting at the HOD.

AM ’13 Event Spotlight: The Nancy N. Caron Annual Member Art Exhibit and Silent Auction
The Nancy N. Caron Annual Member Art Exhibit and Silent Auction will take place on Thursday, May 9th. Online bids on artwork and other items will be accepted until noon on Wednesday, May 8, 2013.

Live bidding at the event on May 9 will open at 3:00 p.m. and close promptly at 7:30 p.m. To place a bid, please email foundation@mms.org and indicate the item number, title, and your bid amount.  You may also call Jennifer Day at (781) 434-7044. Medicare Temporarily Delays Enforcement of Enrollment Requirements
For technical reasons, Medicare has indefinitely delayed enforcing its May 1 requirement that physicians must be enrolled in Medicare to be reimbursed for certain Part B claims. MMS Testifies in Support of Legislation to Improve Mental Health Access
The MMS this week testified in support of “An Act Relative to Enhancing Access to Mental Health Treatment”  before the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing.  This bill would repeal a provision that allows health insurers to delay implementation of new utilization review requirements for behavioral health services until 2015. History of Medicine Lecture May 13 to Feature Harvard University’s Daniel Carpenter
The Boston Medical Library will present the  2013 J. Worth Estes, M.D. History of Medicine Lecture, “The FDA and the Remaking of Modern Clinical Research,” at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2013. The featured speaker is Daniel Carpenter, Ph.D,, Director of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University.  The event will be held at Armenise Amphitheatre, HMS, 200 Longwood Avenue, Boston.  Please RSVP to Roz Vogel at (617) 432-4807 or by email at rvogel@hms.harvard.edu.

Medical Student Mentoring Opportunity: Orientation Session June 4
Join the Committee on Senior Volunteer Physicians from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on June 4, 2013 for an orientation and training session for physicians interested in serving as faculty facilitators for a medical student course. The Integrated Problems Course (IP) is a problem-based learning course taken by all Boston University School of Medicine students throughout their first and second years of school. Through the discussion of clinical cases, the IP Course assists students in methods for integrating information from other courses and developing clinical reasoning skills through small-group discussion and individual research.  The volunteer facilitator meets with groups of six to eight students weekly for two hours for 10 to 12 weeks from September to December. Robin Richman, MD, Appointed to Mass. Board of Registration in Medicine
Robin Richman, MD, chief medical officer and executive vice president of medical affairs at Reliant Medical Group, has been appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick to serve on the Board of Registration in Medicine. Dr. Richman is a member of the MMS Board of Trustees and the Boston Medical Library.

Beth Israel Deaconess, Cambridge Health Alliance Form Partnership
The collaboration, announced late this week, gives doctors with the Cambridge health system greater bargaining power with health insurance companies and a formal relationship with a major teaching hospital.

Steward Health Care Sues Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island
Steward Health Care System, which terminated an agreement to buy a Woonsocket, R.I. hospital last fall, charged in a lawsuit this week that Rhode Island's largest health insurance company blocked the deal by failing to negotiate reasonable health care payments.
