Physician Health Services is available to physicians to
provide support, and, when appropriate, referrals to mental health
professionals and other resources. There is no charge for the services
PHS provides.
Physicians involved in the recent Boston
Marathon, including those who have been providing hospital-based
services to the victims of the bombing, may be currently experiencing
emotional distress. If you are in distress and things are not gradually
improving, or if your distress is starting to interfere with your
ability to function well at work or at home, please consider giving us a
call at PHS.
Steve Adelman, MD, the newly
appointed Director of PHS, and Luis Sanchez, MD, who has led PHS for
the past 15 years, are experienced psychiatrists and are available for
phone consultation at (781) 434-7404.
PHS hosts a
Physician Health Support Group three times per month at the
Massachusetts Medical Society in Waltham. This support group meeting is
led by an experienced clinical social worker and the focus is on meeting
the needs of practicing physicians, residents and medical students who
are experiencing work-related stresses and who might benefit from
collegial support guided by a seasoned mental health professional. The
focus is on strengthening coping strategies to assist in managing the
rigors of medicine and maintaining healthy work-life
balance.
The group meets on the second and fourth
Wednesday and the fourth Monday of each month from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at
the MMS on Winter St. in Waltham.
If you are
interested in learning more about the support group, or, if you would
like to participate, please contact the Support Group Facilitator, Ms.
Diana Barnes Blood, LICSW, at (781) 259-0166 in advance of attending
your first meeting.
