Massachusetts Medical Society: Weighing the Evidence on Obesity

Weighing the Evidence on Obesity

Weighing the Evidence on Obesity

In the United States, one-third of adults are obese, a nearly threefold increase over the last several decades. Another one-third of US adults are overweight. Estimates on the annual cost of medical expenditures associated with obesity are approximately $150 billion. The primary goal of the CME activity is to help practitioners understand the growing burden of obesity and its association with chronic diseases, morbidity and mortality.  The course focuses on physician strategies to initiate behavior change and healthy lifestyles, and also touches on the several weight loss drugs currently approved by the FDA.  A large emphasis is also placed on diagnosing obesity. This course was developed and jointly provided by Alosa Health, Inc. ( www.alosahealth.org ).

Learning Objectives:

  • Screen patients for obesity and discuss the health risks of being overweight/obesity
  • Assess patient's motivation to modify lifestyle and define success in terms of realistic goals.
  • Encourage multi-component lifestyle interventions to reduce weight and lower CV risk.
  • Recognize that prescription drugs have some efficacy data but safety concerns limit their use.
  • Recognize that weight-loss surgery in selected patients leads to long-term weight loss, and decreases risk of diabetes and mortality
