For too long the number of new HIV cases in Massachusetts has been stable, yet STDs have increased. National recommendations for primary care include routine STI/HIV screening, vaccination, and treatment (including use of Expedited Partner Therapy to decrease chlamydia reinfection) of youth and young adults and other at-risk populations. 

This online CME activity is comprised of three modules and is based on a live webinar that was held on June 7, 2013.  Sponsored by the MMS and its Committee on LGBT Matters in Collaboration with the MA Department of Public Health, this course will bring you up-to-date on current screening guidelines and help you gain confidence with sexual history-taking and initiating discussion.

Module 1
HIV and STD's: Who is at Greatest Risk?
What Can We Do?

Learning Objectives

  • Take a comprehensive history of sexual health, including risk of HIV and STIs.
  • Apply screening guidelines for STI/HIV in appropriate primary care populations .
  • Utilize HPV vaccination at maximum recommended levels.
  • Understand situations where Expedited Partner Therapy is warranted to prevent STI re-infection
  • Develop programs to insure that clinical programs incorporate public health principles.

Course Faculty
Harvey Makadon, MD
Dr. Harvey Makadon is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute, a division of Fenway Health, Boston.  He is a member of the Division of General Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he has had a primary care practice and served as Vice President of Medical Affairs. He is currently the LGBT Advisor in Harvard Medical School's Office for Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs.

Dr. Katherine Hsu is the Medical Director for the Division of STD Prevention & HIV/AIDS Surveillance, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Director of the New England STD/HIV Prevention Training Center. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Attending Physician in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Boston University Medical Center.
