Adapting Your Practice to a New Model of Care Delivery
Speaker:  Judith L. Steinberg, MD, MPH – Deputy Chief Medical Officer, UMass Medical School, Commonwealth Medicine
The Mass. Executive Office of Health and Human Services has set a goal for all primary practices in Massachusetts to become patient-centered medical homes by 2015.  This presentation will highlight lessons learned from a statewide multi-payer PCMH initiative and other PCMH programs that are transforming the care delivery system in Massachusetts.

Jeff Loughlin - PPRC TalksJeff Loughlin
Project Director, Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative

Jeff Loughlin works with providers, practice leaders, and medical and administrative staffs to ensure successful adoption and meaningful use of electronic health record (EHR) technology in medical offices.  Jeff joined MAeHC in 2005 and has consulted with a number of practices and community-based EHR and HIE initiatives.

Prior to joining MAeHC, Jeff served as an information technology consultant at Boston Medical Center, where he provided EHR implementation and training services for the outpatient medical departments.  Before moving to the IT team, Jeff spent several years as a practice manager in a variety of outpatient settings at Boston Medical Center, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, and Boston City Hospital.  Jeff is a US Army veteran with over 23 years of military service and is currently serving with the Massachusetts Army National Guard as a Medical Service Corps Lieutenant Colonel.

Jeff holds a Masters in Healthcare Administration from Simmons College in Boston and a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Jennifer Joe, MD, is a Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) nephrology graduate turned physician entrepreneur CEO of Medstro.com, a new and innovative social network for physicians, who still regularly works the VA emergency room and urgent care clinics.  As Editor-in-Chief of MedTech Boston and being based in Kendall Square, arguably the physical collision point of technology and academic medicine, Dr. Joe interacts and supports new medical technology and has insights on best uses.  She believes that technology has given us some powerful social media tools, but appropriately utilizing them can be tricky.  Because of her insights, Dr. Joe has recently spoken at South by Southwest, South by Southwest V2V, Health 2.0, the Massachusetts Medical Society EHR Conference, and IN3 Medical Device 360.  Dr. Joe is also a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on IT and Committee on Communications and is the Massachusetts American College of Physicians Information Officer.  Dr. Joe can be found at @JenniferJoeMD and www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferjoemd/ and manages 3 Twitter, 2 LinkedIn, and 3 Facebook accounts.


Ateev Mehrotra - PPRC TalksAteev Mehrotra, MD, MPH
Associate Professor of Health Care Policy and Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Hospitalist, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Dr. Mehrotra’s research focuses on interventions to decrease costs and improve quality of care.  Much of his work has focused on innovations in delivery such as retail clinics and e-visits have on quality, costs, and access to health care.  He is also interested in the role of consumerism and whether price transparency and public reporting of quality can impact patient decision making.  Related work has focused on quality measurement including how natural language processing can be used to analyze the data in electronic health records to measure the quality of care.

Dr. Mehrotra received his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Boston.  His clinical work has been both as a primary care physician and as an adult and pediatric hospitalist.   He also has received formal research training with a Masters of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Masters of Science in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.  In 2008, he received the Milton W. Hamolsky Award for Outstanding Scientific Presentation by a Junior Faculty Member by the Society of General Internal Medicine.  In 2013, he received the Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award from AcademyHealth for health services researchers early in their careers who show exceptional promise.

Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and Department of Family Medicine & Community Health 

Judith L. Steinberg is Deputy Chief Medical Officer for UMass Medical School's Commonwealth Medicine division and also serves as Senior Director of Clinical Affairs for the Center for Health Policy and Research.  In these roles, she provides oversight to all of Commonwealth Medicine's clinically focused services and programs and focuses on enterprise-wide quality improvement.  She also helps to develop linkages with academic departments of the Medical School to foster collaborative initiatives.

Dr. Steinberg leads the UMass Medical School team that is supporting the implementation of the statewide, multi-payer Patient-Centered Medical Home Initiative in Massachusetts.  She is a Clinical Associate Professor in UMass Medical School's Department of Medicine and Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. 

Before joining Commonwealth Medicine in 2008, Dr. Steinberg served as the Medical Director of Neponset Health Center in Boston.  Prior to that, she was the HIV Program Director at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center.  She was an attending physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Boston Medical Center, as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.  She continues to practice medicine at Neponset Health Center and at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Steinberg is a member of the National Association of Community Health Centers, serving as Vice-Chair of its Clinical Practice and Program Committee and as a member of its HIV and Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Committee.  She serves on several committees and boards in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, focusing on quality improvement, primary care service delivery, payment reform, public health, and global health.

Dr. Steinberg received her medical degree from the University of Texas at Dallas Southwestern Medical School and completed an infectious disease fellowship at Beth Israel/Brigham and Women's hospitals in Boston.  In 2007–2008, she was a Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellow in Minority Health Policy.  She holds a master's degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health and a bachelor's degree in biology from the State University of New York.
