“The Impact of Unconscious Bias in Healthcare”

Unconscious bias, also known as implicit bias or implicit social cognition, refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. We will examine how unconscious bias impacts healthcare delivery and discuss strategies to reduce unconscious bias within healthcare teams and in treating patients.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie is a graduate of Harvard College, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Harvard Chan School of Public Health.  She trained in internal medicine and endocrinology at MGH and has been a grant-funded investigator in the field of endocrinology.  She has been instrumental in developing and implementing programs to eliminate bias toward underrepresented and LGBT physicians and patients.  She has been recognized for her work in this area with the HMS Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award and the Office for Diversity & Community Partnership Fellowship.
