The MMS and its Committee on Women in Medicine are pleased to present the 2017 Women's Health Forum - Hormones: Do They Define Us? 
 
This conference is provided by the Massachusetts Medical Society and its Committee on Women in Medicine in collaboration with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women's Health and Gender Biology.

Activity Objectives:
After participating in this activity, you should be able to:
  • Summarize how normal and abnormal hormone regulation impact on the weight of women from puberty through later ages    
  • Recognize how certain endocrine disorders affect women disproportionately compared to men  
  • Determine how treatment of thyroid disease and thyroid cancer may differ for women depending on age and where they are in their reproductive life span
  • Assess how complications during pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia affect maternal and child health after the postpartum period  
  • Explain how Estrogen and Progesterone hormones (and lack thereof) can affect metabolism in pubertal, mid-life and post-menopause in all women
  • Discern the role of leptin and insulin resistance in obesity
  • Identify the connection between stress and hormones
  • Understand the role of the adrenal gland in puberty and later years  
  • Describe what have we learned from the Women’s Health Initiative and how has evolving data and clinical practice changed in prescribing hormone replacement therapy  
  • Demonstrate how estrogen and other sex steroid hormones influence bone health throughout the lifespan
  • Discuss if hormones are protective against cardiac disease --or why do more women have myocardial infarctions  after menopause  
  • Determine the relationship between hormones and psychiatric disorders
  • Counsel transgender patients on hormonal treatment options
