Dr. Brendel is the Director of the Center for Bioethics and the Director of the Master of Science in Bioethics Program at Harvard Medical School. She bases her clinical work in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital where she is the director of Law and Ethics at the Center for Law, Brain, and Behavior. She is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Rebecca W. Brendel, M.D., J.D. is the immediate past president of the American Psychiatric Association, chair of the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Ethics, Grievances, and Professional Standards, and a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.

Dr. Brendel earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. She completed her psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General and McLean Hospitals, a forensic psychiatry fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an ethics faculty fellowship at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard. She is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.

Elizabeth Boskey is Co-Director of Research in the Division of Gynecology at Boston Children’s Hospital, an Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and an Instructor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and she completed the Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Bioethics in 2019. Dr. Boskey is also a Licensed Independent Clinical Social with a clinical and research focus on the sexual and reproductive health of sexual and gender minority individuals as well as access to care for these populations. She is one of the founders, and the current head, of the New England Gender C.A.R.E. (Collaboration. Access. Research. Education.) Consortium, an organization designed to promote collaboration in transgender health across the New England region.

Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Harvard Medical School

Frances Grimstad (she/her) is the Chair of the MMS Committee on LGBTQ Matters. She is also a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. She has completed fellowships in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Children's Mercy Hospital as well as Gender Affirming Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

She engages in clinical and research work surrounding transgender and intersex reproductive health. She has been involved in trans health advocacy since her own adolescence, when she decided to pursue medicine to address disparities in care faced by these communities. Her interests center around optimizing reproductive health outcomes for both populations including hormonal and menstrual management, sexual health, surgical care, and family planning. At Boston Children’s she is the founder of the Transgender Reproductive Health Service and also the gynecologist in the Center for Gender Surgery and the Being-U clinic (the program for patients with intersex traits, or differences in sexual development).

Research Lead, GenderCare Center at Boston Medical Center

Dr. Carl Streed, Jr. is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of General Internal Medicine at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine and the Research Lead for the GenderCare Center at Boston Medical Center. As the Research Lead for the GenderCare Center at Boston Medical Center he collaborates with researchers, clinicians, and communities to assess and address the health and well-being of transgender and gender diverse individuals.

Nationally, Dr. Streed has chaired the American Medical Association Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Issues, served on the board of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality, is on the Faculty Advisory Board of the Medical Student Pride Alliance, and currently serves as the President of the US Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Dr. Streed’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of sexual and gender minority persons and communities have earned him several awards, notably from the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University Alumni Associations, the American Medical Association Foundation (twice), the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, as well as recognition from the Obama White House.
