Physician Health Services, Inc. (PHS) Welcomes New Medical Director

Mark J. Albanese, M.D. Mark Albanese, MD, is the new Medical Director of PHS. Dr. Albanese is a graduate of Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University and brings more than thirty years of experience as a psychiatrist specializing in addiction psychiatry. He brings compassion, integrity, and administrative acumen to his understanding of physicians’ challenges. He is a longtime MMS member and has also served on the PHS Clinical Advisory Committee for more than 20 years. Most recently, Dr. Albanese was Medical Director for Addictions at Cambridge Health Alliance. He is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and is board-certified in both psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. In his new role, Dr. Albanese oversees all professional, educational, assessment, and monitoring services offered by PHS to the Massachusetts medical community. As part of the leadership team, he will be an integral part of steering strategy to realize the PHS mission of improving the health, wellbeing and effectiveness of physicians and medical students in MA, while supporting patient safety.

PHS is open, though virtually. PHS is always available for consultations – on the fly, or in depth, assistance with burnout and self-care techniques, and referrals. Call: 781-434-7404.

The Physician Health Services, Inc. (PHS) core mission of promoting the health, well-being, and effectiveness of physicians and medical students in Massachusetts has never been more relevant. We continue to be in touch with hundreds of physicians on the front lines of providing medical care and provide them with support, resources, and a listening ear. Services are provided virtually now, including support groups for current clients.

In the interest of the well-being of the broader medical community, and recognition that we are all in this together, PHS will be offering a twice weekly free and confidential ‘Virtual Self-Care Group’ to physicians in MA, facilitated by licensed PHS professionals. Groups will meet on Tuesday and Thursdays through April, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. If interested, please email: and let us know how to reach you.

Reminder about the PHS Podcast series on Burnout:
MedPEP, the Medical Professionals Empowerment Program
, is a podcast series created and sponsored by PHS. The crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic is stressing our already stressed healthcare system. Physician burnout rates which were hovering at 50% are climbing and physicians’ physical and emotional well-being are at risk. Each MedPEP podcast delves into ways physicians can practice self-care, even in a time of crisis. MedPEP also provides free, risk-management CMEs.
