Massachusetts Medical Society: MMS Joins Amicus Brief Supporting Abortion Clinic Buffer Zone Law

MMS Joins Amicus Brief Supporting Abortion Clinic Buffer Zone Law

The MMS joined the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, in support of a Massachusetts law which prohibits protesters from congregating within 35 feet of entrances, exits and driveways of abortion clinics.

The plaintiffs in the case argue that the law infringes their First Amendment rights. The respondents argue that the law does not deprive protesters of their free speech rights.

The Massachusetts law was upheld by the federal Appeals Court in January 2013. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case in January 2014.
