Morbidity and Mortality Conference Guidelines

Mortality and Morbidity Conferences are considered Regularly Scheduled Conferences (RSC’s). RSC’s are the daily, weekly, or monthly CME activities that are primarily planned by and presented to the institution’s professional staff. Each of these RSC’s must be in compliance with all applicable MMS accreditation elements and policies to qualify for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™. The MMS expects that each session of each activity is preplanned and presented with the intention of being “in compliance.”

The purpose Mortality and Morbidity Conferences is to have monthly reviews of either conventional or selective deaths and complications of preceding periods. To meet the criteria for Category 1 Credit as outlined below, a moderator must facilitate the activity and the cases reviewed must be presented to illustrate preplanned topics. To cover the chosen topics during the meeting, a maximum of three cases should be included in an hour’s time. Also, to be considered a planned program of CME that covers a subject area in depth, research on the topics should be presented and educational objectives for the series stated. The format can include presentations given by several speakers from different disciplines or can center on a single speaker. Following meetings, there must be a means of evaluating if the educational objectives of the series are being met, the quality of instructions, and the activity’s relevancy to medical practice. Evaluation forms at the end of this activity can provide this data.

Please Note: For conferences to qualify as risk management, the aforementioned guidelines must be adhered to, and the content must be in compliance with the MA Board of Registration in Medicine’s regulations.

Planning and Needs Assessment

  • To choose cases which address identified needs of the staff (audit, quality assurance evaluations, questions or problems raised by the staff)
  • To discuss a maximum of three cases per hour
  • To use cases that illustrate preplanned topics
  • To plan a form of evaluation

Use of Moderator

  • To invite specialists and subspecialists, physicians-in-training, and health professionals, when applicable
  • To include pathologist(s), radiologist(s), surgeon(s), and primary care physicians
  • To include, if possible, medical librarian to provide a bibliography applicable to the cases
  • To lead discussion, summarize and evaluate conference(s)

Disclosure
The MMS requires that all RSC’s comply with the Standards for Commercial Support and all related MMS Essential Areas and Elements, Policies and Guidelines related to faculty disclosure and commercial support.

Monitoring
All accredited providers are asked to have a system in place to monitor the compliance of their entire RSC activity.  Accredited providers will be asked to:

  • Describe their monitoring system
  • Demonstrate that the monitoring system has been implemented
  • Explain and show that the monitoring system has facilitated improvements
  • Be able to store and retrieve information about learner participation.
