Giving Back: A Pathway to Happiness, Purpose and Fulfillment – Speaker Biographies

Sanjiv Chopra, MDSanjiv Chopra, MD

Dr. Chopra is a sought-after inspirational speaker across the United States and abroad, addressing diverse audiences on topics related to medicine, leadership, happiness, and living with purpose. He is a bestselling author with more than 150 publications and 10 books to his credit.

Dr. Chopra has received numerous rewards. In 2003, The American Gastroenterological Association Distinguished Educator Award was bestowed upon him. In 2009 he was elected as a Master of the American College of Physicians, a singular honor bestowed to only a select few individuals for being “citizen physicians, educational innovators, scientific thinkers and humanists who inspire those around him or her and sets the standards for quality in medicine.” In 2012, he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for “exemplifying outstanding qualities in both one’s personal and professional lives while continuing to preserve the richness of one’s particular heritage.” In 2018, Dr. Chopra was honored with the Healthcare Educator of the Year Award at New England Choice Awards.

For 12 years, as Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education (CME) at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Chopra led the most robust academic CME enterprise in the world, reaching out to 80,000 clinicians in 150 countries each year. He is also the James Tullis Firm Chief, Department of Medicine, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Chopra is also Editor-in-Chief of the Hepatology Section of UpToDate, an online resource used by more than 1.2 million physicians in 195 countries.


Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG Maryanne C. Bombaugh, MD, MSc, MBA, FACOG

Dr. Bombaugh is the President of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS), past President of the Massachusetts Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a gynecologist at the Community Health Center of Cape Cod.

She has been an active MMS member since 1993. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees, is a member of the House of Delegates, and is a member of the Massachusetts Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Dr. Bombaugh was the Executive Medical Director of Population Health and Medical Director for Quality and Patient Safety at Reliant Medical Group and was Associate Medical Director for Quality for the Steward Health Care Network. She also serves on the boards of CeltiCare Health and Coverys.  

Dr. Bombaugh earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center, interned at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas and completed residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

A veteran of the U. S. military, she served 12 years in the United States Army Medical Corps, and was the Division Chief of Gynecology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.     

Dr. Bombaugh earned her undergraduate degree from Smith College, a M.Sc from the School of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, and her M.B.A. from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. 


Helen Cajigas, MD, FCAPHelen Cajigas, MD, FCAP

Dr. Cajigas is a Medical Director, Consultant, Inspector, and Medical Review Officer who trained in pathology and pathology subspecialties at the major Harvard Hospitals. A leader, teacher, and altruist, Dr. Cajigas has a track record of holding multiple leadership positions, teaching students, trainees and peers, as well as the community at-large, creating awareness about health topics in addition to opportunities for community involvement and personal and professional enrichment. She has also served as Advisor to pre-medical students from multiple universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Dr. Cajigas is very active in organized medicine. She is the founder, President, and CEO of the Massachusetts Hispanic Medical Association. She is the first Hispanic to chair the MMS Committee on Women’s Health, Committee on Women in Medicine and the Committee on Senior Volunteer Physicians. She also is a member of the House of Delegates, the Society' s policymaking body, and served as a MMS ambassador at the annual meeting of the AMA.

In addition, Dr. Cajigas is the first Hispanic to direct an Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department, as well as a Cytopathology Laboratory, at a Harvard Medical School-affiliated institution. She first researched the health status of Latinos in Massachusetts followed by the reproductive health status of Latinas in the Commonwealth. Dr. Cajigas has received many recognitions for her contributions to medicine, women's health, community service, and outstanding service leading national inspection teams to ensure compliance with the highest regulatory standards, thereby improving patient care. Dr. Cajigas is a visionary with forward thinking and unwavering dedication to improving the health and overall status, especially of women.

Andrew P. Cohen, Esq.Andrew P. Cohen, Esq.

Attorney Cohen has more than a decade of experience as a health care consumer advocate, community organizer, and policy analyst. He co-leads Health Law Advocates (HLA) Public Programs Team, which promotes access to care for enrollees in MassHealth and other state-based programs. Additionally, he directs two HLA programs: the Immigrant Initiative and the Transgender Health Access Project.

Mr. Cohen graduated from Northeastern University School of Law where he was a Public Interest Law Scholar. During law school, he completed co-ops with the Consumer Unit at Greater Boston Legal Services, the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission, Klein Kavanagh Costello LLP, and the Honorable Margot Botsford at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he graduated with High Honors from Wesleyan University with degrees in Government and French Studies. Andrew is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. 


Sahdev R. Passey, MDSahdev R. Passey, MD

Dr. Passey is the recipient of the 2019 Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year Award.

The Free Health Stop in Shrewsbury, MA was started in 2005 under the successful guidance of Dr. Passey, Medical Director, providing free health care to the underserved and uninsured community. He has provided direct clinical patient care and visionary leadership at the program for more than a decade.

Widely active in the community as a “dynamic and visionary leader and an unsung hero of the community in Worcester”, Dr. Passey has been honored with several awards including the Key to the City of Worcester in 1994, the Community Service Award from IMANE in 1998, the Community Clinician Of The Year Award from the MMS Worcester District Medical Society in 2008 and a citation for Community Service by Governor Weld of Massachusetts in 1992.

Dr. Passey, a graduate of the Gandhi Medical College at Bhopal University in India, is a board-certified pediatrician in private practice at Quality Kids Kare in Worcester for the last 40 years and on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics for 32 years.

A member of the MMS since 1988, Dr. Passey continues to serve the Society as a member of its governing body, the House of Delegates. He is also the current President of the Worcester District Medical Society.
