Module 6 - Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome

Created by Meredith Fisher-Corn, MD and Stephen B. Corn, MD

Editors' Note: Medical marijuana has become an important area of study in healthcare. Doctors and healthcare professionals must understand the medical, legal, and social issues to best respond to their patients' questions and attend to their needs. This content area is not intended to encourage or dissuade the use of medical marijuana, but has been created to provide a balanced portrayal of the research in this area.

As the rates of cannabis use increase, so will the incidence of side effects. This course focuses on cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, an uncommon side effect of long-term cannabis use. At the start of this section, we offer a clinical presentation of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and then we discuss the diagnostic criteria, pathophysiology and the natural course of this syndrome. At the conclusion, therapeutic options are mentioned.

Learning Objectives

After reading this material, a participant will be able to:

  • Recognize cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
  • Able to describe the clinical presentation of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
  • List the diagnostic criteria for cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
  • Contrast cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome with cyclical vomiting syndrome
  • List the actions that lead to a remission of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and apply this information to clinical practice
