Harvard Medical School student, Mass. General Hospital resident are winners of 2013 Information Technology Awards from Massachusetts Medical Society

Boston, Mass. – May 1 – A Harvard Medical School student and a resident at Massachusetts General Hospital are the recipients of the 2013 Massachusetts Medical Society's Information Technology Awards.  

The honor recognizes the development of an information technology tool that helps physicians practice medicine, teach medicine, or pursue clinical research. Two awards of $3,000 each are presented annually by the state medical society, to one medical student and one resident, fellow, or intern.  

The winners of this year’s awards are Gaurav Singal, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital, for his project, QPIDMed: Automated Chart Biopsy of the EMR using Natural Language Processing, and Ms. Sun Mi Yoo, a Harvard Medical School student, for Clinical Exchange Community.

Dr. Singal is an internal medicine resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A native of Severna Park, Maryland, he has long been fascinated by the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning to transform healthcare.

Dr. Singal earned a B.S. in Computer Engineering, Summa Cum Laude, from Columbia University and an M.D. with Honors from the joint Harvard Medical School-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. As a Soros fellow, he completed his thesis work at MIT developing novel computational eye-tracking approaches to studying autism. He has spent the last few years working with an informatics group, QPID, at Massachusetts General Hospital to develop several natural-language processing (NLP)-based applications to improve efficiency in healthcare delivery and research. His NLP research platform, SoothSayer, has been the basis for several scientific presentations and publications.

Dr. Singal is an avid web entrepreneur, having developed award-winning international web services such as MyHealthChecklist.org and RotatingRoom.com. He has also worked with the life sciences firm, Third Rock Ventures, to help launch an Interventional Oncology company. In his spare time, he enjoys squash, acoustic guitar, and photography.

Ms. Yoo is a final year M.D.-M.P.H student at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, with a concentration in Quantitative Methods. She is an Abundance Scholar and works with the Clinical Exchange Community of GHD online, coordinating a virtual international consulting tool for over 250 physicians. With the Clinical Exchange Community, she served as a Co-Moderator, was in charge of creating the clinical resources portal, and created a system of site-specific moderators and local champions.

Ms. Yoo conducts prostate cancer genomics research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard School of Public Health and is the Co-Founder and Senior Director of Crimson Care Collaborative at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She now serves as the Administrative Co-Chief of the Crimson Care Umbrella Organization, overseeing five Harvard Medical School clinics.

She has a special interest in medical education and has served as a tutorial leader for the Introduction to Health Care Policy Course (HC750) at Harvard Medical School and served as a Head Teaching Assistant for Project Interphase while she was at MIT. She received an S.B. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from MIT and served as the Lab Manager of Wexler Lab. She is especially interested in utilizing technology to improve medical education in resource-poor settings.
