Full Text of Today's Decisions

“Today’s conflicting appeals court rulings on the Affordable Care Act will no doubt increase the rhetoric by the law’s opponents and proponents alike. Yet the real effect is increased uncertainty and confusion about the law. And that doesn’t help those who depend most on what the law delivers – our patients. Without subsidies, millions of Americans may find insurance beyond their reach, and that will lead to poorer health for many of our citizens.

"We are fortunate that these decisions will have little or no direct effect on patients in Massachusetts. The legal battles will continue, however, and we can only hope that the final decision will be in favor of the millions of Americans who depend on the Affordable Care Act to improve and maintain their health and well-being.”

The Massachusetts Medical Society, with more than 24,000 physicians and student members, is dedicated to educating and advocating for the patients and physicians of Massachusetts. The Society is also a leader in continuing medical education for health care professionals throughout Massachusetts, conducting a variety of medical education programs for physicians and health care professionals. Founded in 1781, MMS is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country.
