Top Place to Work 2013Waltham, Mass. -- November 18 -- For the fifth time in six years, the Waltham-based Massachusetts Medical Society has been named a ‘top place to work’ by The Boston Globe in the media company’s 2013 Top Places to Work in Massachusetts survey.

The statewide physicians’ organization was named one of the best companies for 2013 in the large size workplace category -- ranking 15th out of 35 companies selected in that category.  This is the fourth consecutive year in which it has been named to the Globe’s list of top workplaces.

Massachusetts Medical Society Executive Vice President Corinne Broderick, a 28-year veteran with the organization who served the Society in several capacities prior to becoming its executive vice president in 2001, said such an honor is always prized and extremely gratifying, especially because it is based on a survey of employees.

“This recognition,” said Ms. Broderick, “is most of all a testimony to our employees, to their dedication and professionalism, and their pride in our organization. They make this a special place, and I am proud to work with them and congratulate and thank all of them again for what they do to make this a top place to work.”

Headquartered in Waltham with offices in Boston, Lakeville and Wilbraham, the Massachusetts Medical Society has 415 employees working in information technology, editorial, product development, global sales, membership services, finance, medical education, communications, public health, health policy and advocacy. As the professional association of physicians for the state, MMS has more than 24,000 physicians and medical students in its membership.

The Society, under the auspices of NEJM Group, publishes the New England Journal of Medicine, a leading global medical journal and web site, and NEJM Journal Watch alerts and publications covering 13 specialties. The Society is also a leader in continuing medical education for health care professionals throughout Massachusetts, conducting a variety of medical education programs for physicians and health care professionals. Founded in 1781, MMS is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country.

The Globe’s Top Places to Work recognizes the most progressive companies in the state based on employee opinions about company leadership, compensation and benefits, diversity/inclusion, family-friendly flexibility, and values and ethics. Private companies and nonprofits, as well as publicly-held businesses, were included in the analysis.

One hundred twenty five companies in all were cited by the Globe, ranked in four categories by size of employee population, with 25 small (50-99 employees), 40 medium (100-249), 35 large (250-999), and 25 of the largest (1,000 or more) organizations comprising the complete list. The Globe invited 1,746 employers to participate for its 2013 ranking, and the results are based on a survey of more than 76,000 employees from 333 organizations. The Globe conducted the research in partnership with Workplace Dynamics, specialists in employee engagement and retention.

This year marks the seventh time in nine years that MMS has been recognized as a top workplace.  Besides the Globe honors, MMS has been honored as a ‘best place to work’ in the Boston Business Journal's Top 50 Best Places to Work in Massachusetts, and in a program directed by the Society for Human Resource Management, the Society was selected as one of the 50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America by the Great Place to Work® Institute, an international research and consulting firm.

The Globe featured the results of the 2013 rankings in a special 48-page magazine in the Boston Sunday Globe on November 17. Results are also available online at www.bostonglobe.com/topplaces and www.boston.com/topplaces.
