Massachusetts Medical Society: Physician Focus: Straight Talk on Pain Medication

Physician Focus: Straight Talk on Pain Medication

Massachusetts has been hit hard by the epidemic of opioid overdoses. Some pain medications are opioids, so this epidemic is changing the way we treat and manage pain. Maybe you are dealing with pain or addiction yourself — and if you’re not, you likely know someone who is. That’s why patients and their families are asking questions: Does it make sense for me (or my loved one) to use an opioid medication? How can I do that safely, without risking addiction? Why is our doctor reluctant to prescribe this pain medication? Which other pain treatments might work instead? If someone accidentally overdoses on this medication, what should I do? In this episode of Physician Focus, two experts answer your questions — a physician who specializes in pain, and a pharmacist.
