Physician Focus: Cold and Flu

Although influenza can strike at any time of the year, we’re heading into what has become known “cold and flu season.” In this edition of Physician Focus, we’ll take a look at the differences between a cold, which can be uncomfortable and mildly affect day-to-life, and the flu, which can be quite serious and even deadly, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting that each year between 10,000-30,000 Americans die from the flu. In the first segment, Dr. Benjamin Kruskal from Atrius Health talks about those with an increased risk of infection, the symptoms, prevention - including information on who should receive a flu vaccine - and what to do if you believe you have the flu. Then, Dr. Laura Riley from Massachusetts General Hospital joins the program to discuss the flu and its associated risks as it relates to two specific populations – pregnant women and newborns.
