Massachusetts Medical Society: 2015 MMS Physician Practice Environment Index

2015 MMS Physician Practice Environment Index

The Massachusetts Medical Society Physician Practice Environment Index is a statistical indicator of eight factors that affect physician practices at both the state and national level.  The state and national indices provide a general overview of the past year, while variations in the eight specific index components, such as median physician income levels or cost of maintaining a practice, provide insight into the underlying causes of change.

2015 MMS Index

In 2014, the Massachusetts index rose 1.1 percent and the United States increased 1.2 percent.  In previous years, the environment has been consistently more favorable for physicians in the nation than in Massachusetts. There continues to be an increasing gap between the Massachusetts Index and the U.S. Index with a difference of nearly 10 percent between state and national levels.
