Massachusetts Medical Society: Massachusetts Medical Society on returning to school

Massachusetts Medical Society on returning to school

The Massachusetts Medical Society wishes to emphasize the importance of school to our children’s and communities’ health. Education is critical to a child's future prospects and schools provide so much more than education. We know that closed schools are having a disparate impact on already disadvantaged communities and that in any reopening, addressing these inequities should be prioritized.

Acknowledging that much about this coming fall remains unknown, we support the safe and equitable return of as many students, teachers, and support staff as possible to in-person school settings. The Society endorses vigilance in public health decisions that maximize our chance of reaching this goal.

After incorporating the best available scientific knowledge to its opening recommendations, schools must also plan to react quickly to minimize health risks and disruption should events require.
