Massachusetts Medical Society Elects Officers for 2016-2017

Waltham/Boston – May 5 – The Massachusetts Medical Society, the statewide professional association of physicians representing more than 25,000 physicians and medical students in the Commonwealth, today elected its 2016-2017 officers, with seven physicians elected and re-elected to the organization’s leadership at its annual meeting. Each will serve a one-year term in their respective positions.

James S. Gessner, M.D. of Chestnut Hill was elected President, succeeding Dennis M. Dimitri, M.D. of Worcester.  Dr. Gessner is a physician with Anaesthesia Associates of Massachusetts, one of New England’s largest private practice anesthesiology groups serving major academic and medical centers throughout the Northeast.  A member of the Society since 1982, he has served the organization in a variety of capacities, most recently as President-Elect and Vice President, respectively, over the last two years.  He has been a member of the Society’s Board of Trustees since 2006 and chaired the organization’s Committee on Finance for six years. 

Henry L. Dorkin, M.D. of Newton was elected President-Elect. Board-certified in pediatrics with a subspecialty in pediatric pulmonology, Dr. Dorkin is Clinical Chief of the Division of Respiratory Diseases, Director of the Pulmonary Clinical Research Program, Co-Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Clinical Center, and Co-Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutic Development Center, all at Boston Children’s Hospital. A member of the Society since 1982, Dr. Dorkin served as Vice President from 2015-2016. He is a member of the House of Delegates, and the Committees on Legislation, Preparedness, Membership Services, and the Organized Medical Staff Section.  

Alain A. Chaoui, M.D. of Boxford, a board-certified family medicine physician at Family Medicine North in Peabody, was elected Vice President. A longtime active member of the Society, Dr. Chaoui served as Secretary-Treasurer for the last two years. He is a member of the Board of Trustees and House of Delegates and past chairman of the Committee on Membership. He is also a past president of the Essex South District Medical Society and is the current Chair of the Massachusetts Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Joseph Bergeron, M.D. of Acton, a pathologist with Atrius Health/Harvard Vanguard, was elected Secretary-Treasurer; Corey E. Collins, D.O. of Reading, a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, was re-elected Assistant Secretary-Treasurer; David A. Rosman, M.D., M.B.A., of Jamaica Plain, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate director of business development for Mass General Imaging, was re-elected Speaker of the House of Delegates, the Society’s Governing Body; and Francis P. MacMillan Jr., M.D., of North Andover, owner and president of Merrimack Valley Gastroenterology in Haverhill, was re-elected Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates.
