Waltham – April 25th – Two local women, Emily A. Mann of Middleton
and Elizabeth J. Burgess of Danvers, have been selected as the 2017 winners of
the Essex South District Medical Society’s Medical Student Scholarships, presented
by area physicians to local residents attending medical school. Each will receive $5,000 toward their medical
education.
The scholarships are awarded to medical school students who have resided
in a local community for at least five years prior to college and who have a
desire to return to the area to practice medicine.
Ms. Mann is a student at Boston University School of Medicine with
an expected graduation date of 2020. She
is a 2010 graduate of Masconomet Regional High School and received her bachelor
of arts degree in biology from Boston University in 2014. As an undergraduate, she served as Vice
President of the Eta Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta, a national organization for
women focusing on leadership, citizenship, and community service. In medical school, her activities include
being a leader in BU’s Sidekicks Program, aiding patients and families coping
with sickle cell anemia. She has also assisted
in research projects at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center
and is currently a volunteer in the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Continuous
Care Initiative for quality improvement at the hospital.
Ms. Burgess attends Wake Forest School of Medicine in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is scheduled to graduate in 2019. A 2009 graduate of Danvers High School, she
received her bachelor of science degree in genetics, summa cum laude, from the University of New Hampshire with
membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Among
several activities in medical school, she has participated in the Himalayan
Health Exchange, working at local clinics in India, and traveled on a Medical
Mission Trip to Haiti. She is also class representative for the Wake Forest
Chapter of Operation Smile, an organization that works with local medical
professionals, governments, and hospitals around the world to provide safe
surgery and health care for children.
The
Essex South District Medical Society is one of 20 district medical societies
across Massachusetts that are part of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the
statewide association of physicians with more than 25,000 physicians and
student members.
