Center for Community Health Education, Research, and Service (CCHERS) - $8,000
To support early identification, crisis intervention, and a comprehensive range of support and prevention services for battered women and their children

Children's Cove - $18,000
To support the Children's Cove Sexual Abuse Awareness Campaign, a radio advertising campaign to be heard on local stations in order to raise awareness about sexual abuse as well as offer information on services Children's Cove provides for abuse victims

Franklin Medical Center - $5,000
To support a community outreach project with local elementary schools for the purpose of educating school children about the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of infection

Health Care for All - $10,000
To support the Outreach for Kids Project, a statewide outreach effort designed to enroll children in Massachusetts who are eligible for health insurance coverage that have not yet participated in the Covering Kids and Families Program

Katie Brown Educational Program - $10,000
To support outreach to include more communities and more diverse audiences. Specifically, the grant will support data analysis to investigate quantitative and qualitative questions to document measurable outcomes.

ProjectHEALTH - $12,000
To support the development of hospital-based resource/advocacy centers in Boston, aiming to assist low-income families in accessing community resources critical for their health and well-being

REACH - $5,000
To support the REACHing Teen Voices project, a project focusing on the rising community health epidemic of teen dating violence

Southbridge Interfaith Hospitality Network - $10,000
To support additional case management support to homeless and potentially homeless clients

Care for the Medically Underserved

Cape Cod Free Clinic and Community Health Center - $25,000
To support the Diabetes Initiative for the Uninsured, a program providing a continuum of services and care to identify uninsured adults that have untreated diabetes, and to significantly improve health outcomes of diagnosed individuals

CHANGE - $5,000
To support preventive services and screening for medically uninsured individuals in Central Massachusetts

E.P. Duffy Practice at Highpoint - $3,000
To provide medical care to medically underserved, uninsured, and at-risk patients from Plymouth County and the surrounding communities of greater Brockton, New Bedford, and Fall River

The Sharewood Project - $10,000
To support expanded health care services offered at the clinic, including a regularly offered Diabetes Screening Clinic and rapid HIV testing

VIM Berkshires - $10,000
To expand preventive medical services, increase free dental care, expand mental health services, and establish a cardiology clinic

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship - $25,000
To support the Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program, one of seven such programs in the U.S. The Fellows Program supports students in medicine and other health professions who are engaged in community service projects that promote health and improve access to health care for underserved populations.

Homelessness Prevention Initiative (Year Three) - $50,000
To focus on the needs of one specific target population:  mothers and their children who are at risk of becoming homeless. In collaboration with The Boston Foundation and Tufts Health Plan, $1 million was awarded to 18 agencies with programs targeting those in need of direct assistance and stabilization; discharge planning and placement for those being released from care and custody; supportive housing services; mental health support; and substance abuse counseling. The Initiative will bring together organizations providing a diverse range of programs to share best practices and recommendations, with a goal of advancing knowledge, and providing outcome data and proven models on how to prevent homelessness.

International Health Studies

The following individuals received a $750 grant to defray the costs of study in another country:

Maya Vijayaraghavan
Fourth-year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine who provided basic health care to the underserved population in Nome, Alaska

Rishi Desai, M.D.
Second-year pediatric resident at Boston Medical Center who provided basic health screening and medical care in the small villages of Nepali, Himalaya

Rachel Siegel
Fourth-year medical student at the University of Massachusetts Medical School who will assist a US Specialist to help set up HIV counseling and testing program at the district hospital and rural clinics in Bunda, Tanzania

Mike Lee
Fourth-year medical student at the University of Massachusetts Medical School who will assist in providing medical care to patients infected with HIV in the Republic of South Africa

2023-2024 Grants

The Foundation awarded $183,500 to 16 Massachusetts non-profits addressing the most vulnerable in our communities, with the majority of the funds awarded supporting access to health care, behavioral health services, and food insecurity. Additionally, $12,000 was awarded to six medical students and four resident physicians to offset travel and lodging expenses for study abroad.
