Essential Area 2: Educational Planning and
Evaluation
Element 2.5
Evaluate the effectiveness of its overall CME
program and make improvements to the program.
The mission statement and annual goals provide
the benchmarks for a CME provider to review their work
periodically, usually annually. By comparing the mission statement and
its yearly goals with the portfolio of activities for the past year, the
group can assess their performance. Are the presentations consistent
with the mission statement? Do they actively reflect the annual goals?
If not, should the goals be adapted or other presentations sought? An
overall evaluation is not simply a review of evaluations for individual
presentations. The overall evaluation is a broader look at the whole
program to assess strengths, weaknesses, and potential changes. Some
questions might include: Are we offering the right number of programs
and do we get positive results? What are those results? Do we have the
resources to continue at the same level, or should we expand or cut
back? Are we able to recruit the speakers we want? The MMS does not
dictate that the overall evaluation demonstrate success in all efforts,
but rather that the process provides an opportunity to reflect on all of
the work of the CME program. A summary of the discussion in the CME
committee minutes provides a good source of documentation.
