Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) Scholars
Program
2013 Scholars Award Program
- Amount: $10,000 to four students from each Massachusetts
Medical School.
- Eligibility/Requirements: Fourth-year medical students expected to
graduate in 2013 from one of the following schools: Boston University
School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Tufts University School of
Medicine and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
- Each nominee must be a member of the Massachusetts Medical
Society.

of the schools listed

MMS Medical Information Technology Awards
- Amount: $3,000 annually to one medical student and one resident
physician.
- Eligibility: MMS member. Medical students, residents, or
fellows enrolled in one of the four Massachusetts Medical Schools or a
Massachusetts hospital or training program.

Massachusetts Medical Society International Health Studies
Grant Program
MMS Student Section Community Service Grants
- Amount: Up to $250 of funding for each of two service projects
per medical school chapter of the Section, per calendar year.
- Eligibility: Current medical student members of the MMS whose
projects meet objectives in community and social service, public health
activism and education, or volunteer mentorship activities

Charles River District Medical Society -- Dr. George G.
Katsas Scholarship Fund
- The Charles River District Medical Society Program is available
to any medical school student enrolled at an approved US institution who
is a legal resident of one of the five towns comprising the district:
Needham, Newton, Waltham, Wellesley, and Weston. Applications must be
received before December 31st of the sophomore or junior
year. If the scholarship is awarded in the sophomore year it
may be renewable for the junior year upon reapplication and at the
discretion of the Committee on Medical Education. The scholarship is
awarded at the Charles River District Annual Meeting in
April.
- Requirements:
- A Curriculum vitae which must include: legal address, high
school and date of graduation; medical school and expected date of
graduation.
- A letter which includes a statement of personal
goal.
- A copy of the Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid
Service Form or a financial aid form of equivalent informational value
(not the summary page). Financial information is expected to be
comprehensive (this should include parents’ resources).
- A letter from the financial aid officer of the medical school
with detailed verification of financial need.
- A statement of academic standing from the medical
school.
- A letter of recommendation from a district society member or a
faculty member.

Essex South District Medical Society Medical Student
Scholarship Program
- Amount: Determined Annually
- Eligibility: MMS member. Medical students who have established
residency in Beverly, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich,
Lynn, Lynnfield, Manchester, Marblehead, Middleton, Nahant, Peabody,
Rockport, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott, Topsfield, or Wenham for at least
five years prior to college, with a desire to return and practice in
this area.
- Application Deadline: January 1
- Qualifications:
- Residency in an Essex South community for at least 5 years
prior to college, with a desire to return and practice in this
area. These communities are: Beverly, Danvers, Essex,
Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich, Lynn, Lynnfield, Manchester, Marblehead,
Middleton, Nahant, Peabody, Rockport, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott,
Topsfield and Wenham, Massachusetts.

high school with date of graduation, and medical school with expected
date of graduation.

Franklin District Medical Society -- Percy W. Wadman, M.D.
Scholarship
- Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 annually, based on merit and financial
need
- Eligibility: MMS member. Any medical student who resides or
whose family resides in Franklin County
- Criteria:
- At least one parent or guardian must live in Franklin
County.
- A letter of matriculation must be submitted from the medical
school the individual is attending.
- A copy of the 1040 Federal tax form filed by the parent or
guardian for the last tax year must be submitted.
- A copy of the letter of recommendation from the undergraduate
school to the medical school must be submitted.

Hampshire District Medical Society and the Rollin M.
Johnson, M.D. Student Grants Program
- Amount of $2,000 each
- Must live or have lived in Western Massachusetts for at least five
consecutive years.
- A letter of matriculation must be submitted from the medical school
the individual is attending.
- Full-time student in medical school
- A copy of the letter of recommendation from the undergraduate school
to the medical school must be submitted.

Middlesex Central District Medical Society
Scholarships
- Amount: $2,000 annually to one student from each of the four
Massachusetts medical schools, based on need only
- Eligibility: MMS member. Any medical student attending one of
the four Massachusetts medical schools whose primary residence is in
Acton, S. Acton, W. Acton, Bedford, Boxboro, Carlisle, Concord, W.
Concord, Lincoln, S. Lincoln, Littleton, Maynard, or Stow.

Middlesex North District Medical Society -- Dr. Hugh Mahoney
Scholarship Fund
- Amount: Between $1,000 and $1,250 annually, depending upon the
number of qualified applicants.
- Eligibility: MMS member. Any medical student who is enrolled
and has completed one year at an accredited medical school in the U.S.
or Canada and who is a legal resident of Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut,
Dunstable, Groton, Lowell, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, or
Westford.

Norfolk District Medical Society Medical Student Scholarship
Grant
- Amount: $5,000 annually, awarded for either the second or
third year
- Eligibility: MMS member. Any medical student who is a US
citizen, a legal resident of Massachusetts for the last five years, a
member of both the Norfolk District and Massachusetts Medical Society,
and who has completed two years at one of the four Massachusetts medical
schools.

Norfolk South District Medical Society Scholarship
Program
- Amount: $500 to $1,000 per award.

Suffolk District Medical Society
- Amount: Three awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
- Eligibility:
- Enrollment in good standing in the MD program of a Massachusetts medical school
- Membership in the Suffolk District Medical Society
- One award per individual - no repeat awardees in future years
- Requirements:
- Cover letter with a brief statement of personal goals and proposed newsletter article subject (maximum 1 page)
- Curriculum vitae containing legal residential address (maximum 2 pages)
- A statement of academic standing from the medical school
- A letter of recommendation from a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society (preferably a Suffolk District member, and not from a medical student or resident)
- Selection criteria:
- Quality of personal statement
- Academic and literary achievements
- Interest in community service or advocacy
- A diversity of represented medical schools will be sought
- Application deadline: December 31
- The scholarship awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Suffolk District Medical Society, typically held in March. Mail completed applications to:

Worcester District Medical Society Scholarship Fund

medical student enrolled in an accredited medical or osteopathic school
who is a legal resident of Central Massachusetts.

MMS State and District Special Loan Programs
Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) Charitable &
Educational Fund Loans
- Amount: Either $5,000 or $10,000 per year, per borrower, not to
exceed $10,000 in total.
- Third and fourth-year medical students enrolled in one of the
four accredited medical schools in Massachusetts. Applicant must be a
U.S. citizen and a resident of Massachusetts at the time the loan is
made.

Berkshire District Medical Society Loans
- Amount: Between $1,000 and $10,000 annually, with no
interest
- Eligibility: MMS member. Residents of Berkshire County
attending an accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada.
- Terms: Repayment begins the year of graduation, with half of
the repayment due in four years and the balance in two additional
years.

Hampden District Medical Society - Dr. Max & Ida Millman
Foundation Scholarship Loan
Amount: Four $2000, no-interest loans are awarded each year
Eligibility: MMS member. A resident in Hampden County and attending
an accredited medical school Terms: Loan must be repaid after residency
is completed and the physician has been in practice for three years.
Loan is forgiven if the recipient returns to Hampden County and
practices medicine for at least one year.
Application Deadline: September 15 of each academic year
