Dr. Janet C. Limke honored by Norfolk South District Medical Society as 2023 Community Clinician of the Year

Janet Limke

Dr. Janet C. Limke, a physiatrist in Hingham who works at South Shore Health, has been selected as the Norfolk South District Medical Society’s 2023 Community Clinician of the Year.

Limke is recognized by her peers for her exceptional care of her patients and her ongoing commitment, advocacy and educational efforts related to environmental health and patient well-being.

A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society since 2004, Limke is immediate past president, delegate, and alternate trustee, representing the Norfolk South District Medical Society.

She recently completed a term as alternate Massachusetts Medical Society delegate to the American Medical Association. At the AMA, she helped push through policies regarding the adverse health effects associated with gas stoves, updating air pollution standards and addressing the health, safety, and climate risks of fossil fuel-derived hydrogen.

She currently serves as vice chair for the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Environmental and Occupational Health.

Limke received her medical degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; and completed residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Tufts Medical Center. After completing her residency, she joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati. In 1999, she returned to New England to work at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine, followed by New England Baptist Hospital Spine Center.

Limke was recruited to South Shore Health in 2012 to build a spine physiatry practice at the Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine. She is a strong proponent of efficient, intensive exercise to treat many spinal disorders. She enjoys assisting patients with achieving their highest function while minimizing work disability. During the pandemic, she pursued further study and became a diplomat of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. After adopting a plant-based diet about 15 months ago, Limke has discovered unexpected personal health benefits. Lifestyle medicine empowers patients with a set of tools to prevent and, often, reverse chronic diseases. Using lifestyle coaching, she incorporates positive language and cognitive behavioral strategies for enhanced patient engagement.

Hello fellow colleagues,

The link for the April 2022 Norfolk South program “Reconnecting with the Night Sky” featuring special guests, Dr. Mario Motta and Mr. Kelley Beatty, senior editor of Sky and Telescope is ready to be shared.

My brief introduction includes a reminder about the importance of dark skies for our health and the health of the planet. Former MMS President and astronomer, Dr. Mario Motta, then shares his favorite, glowing and lush photographs of deep sky objects, taken through his home observatory. It is truly fascinating! This is followed by Mr. Kelly Beatty, our keynote speaker, who brings us closer in, back to our own galaxy. He provides all the tips we need to orient to the sky above us using just eyes and /or binoculars. He teaches us how to navigate with the free Stellarium app. Link is below.

Mr. Beatty has been explaining the science and wonders of astronomy to the public since 1974. An award-winning writer and communicator, he is Senior Editor for Sky & Telescope magazine. You'll frequently hear his interviews and guest commentaries on National Public Radio and The Weather Channel. He served for a decade on the Board of Directors for the International Dark-Sky Association. The program takes us on a tour of the April Night Sky.

I am pleased to share the recordings of our programs below in four sections for your personal viewing. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our district office at (800) 322-3301 or contact Mrs. Sheila E. Kozlowski via email at skozlowski@mms.org.

Enjoy!

Janet
