Course Overview

COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-COV-2, has caused significant loss of human life and extraordinary disruption. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have learned a good deal, but the outbreak continues to change, with new waves of disease affecting different regions of the world and with the appearance of new viral variants. Where is the pandemic heading and what is the role of widespread vaccination in ending the crisis phase? In this webinar, recorded June 3, 2021, Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Eric Rubin discuss lessons learned and remaining challenges in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anthony S. Fauci, MD, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where he oversees an extensive research portfolio focused on infectious and immune-mediated diseases.  As the long-time chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, Dr. Fauci has made many seminal contributions in basic and clinical research and is one of the world’s most-cited biomedical scientists. He was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved millions of lives throughout the developing world.  

Eric J. Rubin, MD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief, New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Group

Dr. Rubin joined the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and NEJM Group as Editor-in-Chief in September 2019, taking on the responsibility for oversight of all editorial content and policies. Dr. Rubin is an Associate Physician specializing in infectious disease at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He serves on several scientific advisory boards to groups interested in infectious disease therapeutics. Dr. Rubin has also previously served as the Associate Editor for Infectious Disease at the New England Journal of Medicine as well as an editor for several basic science journals including PLoS Pathogens, Tuberculosis, and mBio.
