Advocating for Appropriate Medical Assessments for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Persons with Intellectual Disability/Developmental Disability (ID/DD) experience complex physical, medical, emotional and social problems which requires coordination of medical care across multiple disciplines. This webinar reviews the causes and consequences of intellectual and developmental disabilities, suggests strategies for examining and managing associated health care challenges and focuses on how to develop thoughtful diagnostic and therapeutic strategies as part of a medical team.

I. Leslie Rubin, MD is Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Morehouse School of Medicine, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine, Director, Break the Cycle Program, Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Unit at Emory University, Founder or Break the Cycle of Health Disparities Inc. and Medical Director of The Rubin Center for Autism and Developmental Pediatrics in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Dr. Rubin has been involved in health care for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1977. In 1989, he and Allen Crocker MD published the first textbook on medical care for children and adults with developmental disabilities, Developmental Disabilities: Delivery of Medical Care for Children and Adults; in 2006 they published the 2nd edition, Medical Care for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities; Sadly, Allen Crocker passed away in 2011, but with other partners Dr. Rubin published the 3rd edition in 2016: Health Care for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Across the Lifespan.

Dr. Rubin currently directs interdisciplinary clinical programs for children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities and consults to other programs on children and adults with developmental disabilities. He directs an international program that addresses children’s environmental health disparities which has resulted in a multiple publication. He is on several regional and national Boards and councils and has received a number of awards. 

Intended Audience
This activity is designed for health care leaders, physicians, residents, other health care professionals and students in all health care professions.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the causes, consequences, and challenges of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Distinguish syndromes and their complications, and identify management strategies.
  • Recognize medical co-morbidities common in certain ID/DD associated syndromes.
  • Assemble a comprehensive health history, preferably in advance, and utilizing multiple informants if possible.
  • Develop skills of developmentally appropriate and respectful communication with the patient (rather than with the caregivers only).
  • Design strategies for promoting optimal health.
