WALTHAM – Dr. Amy Gleason Wiegandt, a board-certified internist practicing in Wareham, has been honored by the Barnstable District Medical Society as their 2024 Community Clinician of the Year awardee.
Dr. Wiegandt earned her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine and after completing her residence at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston.
Wiegandt began working in Wareham in 1988 and continues to do so, providing continuous care to patients in her community.
Dr. Wiegandt has been chair of the Department of Medicine at the Southcoast Hospital Group at Tobey Hospital, president of the medical staff of Southcoast Hospital Group at Tobey Hospital and an assistant clinical professor at Tufts Medical School.
She also Serves as chair of the Board of Health in Wareham, a position she has held since 2011. In continuation of the work of her parents, Doctors Betty and Sherm Gleason who were also longtime dedicated physicians in the community, Dr. Wiegandt has
given her heart to providing for the patients in her community.
During the pandemic, Dr. Wiegandt figured out that she could use testing supplies for gyn and other viral cultures to test for Covid and her office became a testing center. She helped to coordinate the health care response for the Board of Health with
the Department of Public Health and her small office became an important testing location when testing was not readily available.
